Super Self-Care

Self-care is an imperative part of a balanced and healthy existence, especially in this day and age full of extra stress. It’s essential to take time for yourself, even if it seems impossible with a busy schedule. We’re going to go over some ideas to help you build a healthy self-care routine, which should enable you to live a happier and more productive life.

  1. Just Breathe – As simple as it sounds, how often do you take the time to just stop and breathe? Doing this one simple thing can lower stress levels and increase your focus. There are obviously plenty of ways to go about this, but we recommend a breathing technique focused on timing. Breathe in for 4 counts and breathe out for 4 counts. Continue doing this as long as you see fit or until you’re completely relaxed. This is a great option for people with very little extra time to set aside for themselves.
  2. Stay Cozy – Find some comfy pajamas or clothes you can wear when you’re hanging out around the house. Get some extra throw pillows for the couch. Look for the softest blanket you can find at the store. Staying cozy in your own space can be a simple way to improve your mood and take care of yourself.
  3. Get Active – This one isn’t about fitness as much as it is about getting your blood pumping. Go for a walk, shoot some hoops, try a few yoga poses, throw the ball for the dog, take a leisurely bike ride, anything to get up and moving. Activities like this are sure to help melt away stress and improve your mood.
  4. Tasty Food – While this may not always be a healthy option, make sure you set aside some time to have some of your favorite foods. Whether it’s a special meal your mom used to make, a tasty treat, or an elaborate dinner at your favorite restaurant, food can do a lot to help ease the mind. If you’re currently watching what you eat, consider looking up healthy substitutions for some of your favorites that aren’t the best for you. It may not be quite the same, but it could very well scratch that itch.
  5. Retail Therapy – Not always a good avenue for the budget conscious or non-materialistic people out there, but for the rest of us this is a solid choice. Go to your favorite mall and window shop. Try on some clothes that you normally wouldn’t. Create a holiday/birthday gift list for yourself. Build a wish list online for special occasions. Venture into a new store. Find a fun new game for yourself and your household to enjoy.

Instead of keeping things bottled up and letting your anxiety grow, give some of these tips a try. Some will make more sense for your lifestyle than others, so keep trying things until you find the right fit. Remember the key to success when trying anything new is to keep an open mind, and try to stay positive!
